Complexions Contemporary Ballet was founded in 1994 by Artistic Directors Dwight Rhoden and Desmond Richardson, hailed by the New York Times as “two of the greatest virtuosos ever to emerge from Ailey land”.
Since its inception, the company has received numerous accolades for its powerful and thought provoking performances. After receiving the coveted New York Times “Critics Choice” Award in 1995, the company began touring nationally and internationally, appearing at major venues throughout the US, including The Joyce Theater, Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Majestic Theater, The Mahalia Jackson Performance Arts Center in New Orleans, The Paramount Theater in Seattle, and the Music Center in Los Angeles. The Company has also been invited to appear at all of the major European dance festivals.
“Founders Desmond Richardson and Dwight Rhoden, along with their New York City-based company of dance thoroughbreds--there are roughly twenty incredibly trained classical and contemporary dancers in the company, but guest artists swell the ranks as needed--have awakened audiences to a new, exciting genre that combines the best of athleticism, lyricism, and technical training and experience."
