Summary of Actions
· Council approved curriculum changes from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Geography.
· Council recommended adoption of the new Academic Calendar.
Call to Order
The meeting was called to order at 3:21 by Professor Carney.
Approval of Minutes
Minutes of November 15 were approved as circulated.
Committee Reports
Executive Committee - Professor Carney
The Executive Committee requests that the Standards Committee determine if current continuation standards should be modified or continued and report to the Faculty Council by April 1, 1993. Both Knoxville and Martin now have higher continuation standards for undergraduates below 56 hours and the Executive Committee wishes to have this studied.
Curriculum Committee - Professor Venters
Proposals from the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences and the Department of Sociology, Anthropology and Geography were presented. Proposals involved changing the name of Environmental Studies to Environmental Sciences and changes in the core requirements for that degree, and addition of Anthropology 374, Forensic Anthropology.
Motion to approve by Professor Weisbaker, seconded by Professor Shepherd. There was no discussion. Motion passed 21-0-0.
NOTE: January 11 will be the last meeting of the Curriculum Committee to consider proposals for inclusion in the 1993-94 catalogue.
Old Business
Academic Calendar - Professor Carney
A new academic calendar was presented. Each fall and spring term will be 70 days, 14 weeks (14 of each day of the week). Each 5-week summer term will be 21 days, 100 minutes per class. Each 7-week term will be 19 class days at three meetings per week, with 110 minutes per class.
Motion by Professor Herron, seconded by Professor Weisbaker to recommend adoption of the Academic Calendar as proposed with a fall break inserted at an appropriate time. Motion passed unanimously by voice vote.
