Central Energy Plant & Distribution Projects

We are working on two major central plant projects that are definitely hard to miss.  The first is a capital project to replace equipment in the plant and to install new mains for chilled and heating water feeds to the campus loop.  We are replacing 40-year old lines that have missing insulation and leaking valves, which translate to higher utility bills for the campus.  The big hole you see north of Maclellan Gym, and now across East Fifth Street is part of that work.    We expect to have Fifth Street open by August 1st, but the work adjacent to the Gym will take several more weeks.

The other central distribution project is along Cardiac Hill.  Again, leaks and old underground piping are being repaired/replaced.  Cardiac Hill should be re-opened to pedestrians at the end of next week.  We hate to cause such disruption to the campus, but summer is the only time to plan for major infrastructure work.

Lot 51 (McCallie & Palmetto)

Work is on-going to create an expanded parking lot on the former funeral home site.  The lot is being built to new City of Chattanooga stormwater management regulations and will feature bio-swales and landscaping to filter lot runoff.  The lot will be ready for parking the start of fall, though the landscaping will not be in place.

Grote Renovation

Work is going at a feverish pace getting this building ready for fall semester.  Too much going on in there to list it all, but I can promise that you will not recognize the inside of Grote Hall once it reopens.

UC Financial Aid Suite

Work on this project is just underway.  The Art classrooms formerly in this space are being moved to renovated space in Guerry Center.

ARC Construction

The pool is taking shape with interior pool walls being poured and brick going up on the east side.  The roof trusses will be put in place sometime in September.  The entrance to Phase I will be relocated to the east door at the start of the fall semester so the adjoining wall and roof work can be accomplished.   A full audio/visual system is being installed in Phase I with TV monitors and a building-wide sound system so you can watch and listen as you work out.  The target completion for the pool addition is late Spring 2011.

New Library Construction

The site development work was done in mid-May, followed immediately by the foundation/footings and structural wall phase.  This work is progressing very well and should wrap up by Labor Day.  The construction documents for the main building are nearly complete, and should be ready for bidding in September.  Anticipated completion is sometime in Spring 2012.
