UTC's Washington Center Internship & Academic Credit Program

Program Overview & Information

UTC offers an exciting opportunity for students (any major with at least a 3.0 GPA and sophomore status) to take a course and obtain a major-related internship in Washington, D.C. through the Washington Center Program. In return, students will receive academic credit for the experience at UTC. Each summer and semester, UTC will help fund this program for a few, selected students. Additional scholarships also are available through The Washington Center and some of the internship employers.

Internship placements are made in various fields within private, public, and nonprofit sectors. There are numerous internship employers; some examples include: The Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, National Institutes of Health, U.S. Department of Education, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Amnesty International, The Washington Times, The White House Media Affairs Office, U.S. Department of Justice, Washington law offices, Congressional offices, and foreign embassies. UTC students internship placement sites have included: First Book, the Environmental Protection Agency, the Canadian Embassy, and Congressman Harold Ford's Office.

In addition, the program provides all participants with unique opportunities to visit foreign embassies as well as attend a congressional breakfast series (with current Congressmen and Congresswomen) and a presidential lecture series (with international, national and local leaders).

While participating in The Washington Center Program, students are living in furnished apartments with other TWC interns. TWC leases space in apartment complexes for its interns and also staffs these complexes with its own resident assistants. In addition, the apartments are located very close to the D.C. subway system and students are encouraged to used this mode of transportation to get to and from their work sites.
