What is Distance Education?
Distance education is defined as off-campus instruction for academic credit, in a situation where students cannot access campus resources. Instruction can be face-to-face, electronically mediated, or a combination of methodologies.
Clarifying information about the definition distance education at UTC:
- Off-campus
Taking place outside of the Chattanooga Metropolitan area ( more than 25 miles from the UTC Campus)- Instruction
All activities connected with the operation of the course, including, but not limited to, lectures, discussions, group activities, audio/visual materials, readings, homework exercises, writing papers/essays/journals, laboratory assignments and experiments, library activities, and help sessions- Academic credit
Where completion of the unit of instruction causes a permanent record to be recorded in the UTC records office- Students
Individuals registered with UTC or at UTC through some other organization that has a formal relationship with UTC. Students are expected to be qualified and motivated to complete the course, and to possess the technical knowledge and equipment needed by the methodology used in the course.- Cannot access
Where students cannot in a timely fashion, without extraordinary travel or time arrangements, make use of campus resources- Campus resources
Resources provided to students registered at UTC, by or through the Institution, including but not limited to, physical Library resources, computer labs, faculty, department head and staff, student services, hands-on labs, and field trips
