Alumni Profile - Kino Becton
Kino Becton, a 2003 UTC graduate, has just embarked on a “hopefully successful” career in politics. Becton, a two-year Student Government Association president, is currently working as a staff assistant for U.S. Rep. Zach Wamp (R-TN).
Q: How did being SGA president prepare you for your budding career in politics?
A: Leading SGA prepared me for a lot of things. I’m a lot more open-minded now. I’ve learned not everyone thinks what Kino thinks. I’ve become more respectful of what others may think. Going into it, I thought this would be a 9-5 job. Really, not one day is like the next.
Q: Why did you choose to enter the world of politics? Has your viewpoint on issues changed in recent months?
A: Growing up in a liberal household I was stuck leaning on one side of the fence. I see myself in politics to develop my skills on both sides. When people need help, they don’t care if you are a Republican or Democrat. They only care about you helping them. When I decide which party I want to be affiliated with, I will be able to look at all the facts and examine things with two clear views.
