Chattanooga Mocs Beat Tennessee Vols in Football - Celebrating Fifty Years Later

    May 21st, 2008

“1000 Riot at UT for 1.5 Hours”

That was the headline on the front page of The Knoxville News-Sentinel on Sunday, November 9, 1958, the day after the Chattanooga Mocs beat the Tennessee Vols 14-6 at UT’s Shields-Watkins Field.  Immediately following the game, students from The University of Chattanooga celebrated their win by tearing down both goal posts and parading through the streets. The scene according to UC alumni, students at the time, started out as celebratory but turned into a massive riot as Knoxville police began firing tear gas grenades. In the end, some $2,000 of damage was accumulated and ten students were arrested.

The scene from that day remains fervently alive in the hearts of many UC alumni. And on Saturday, November 8, 2008, exactly fifty years to the day, the UTC campus will honor and celebrate that famous UC football event at the home game of the UTC versus Appalachian State football game.  It is fitting that the UTC Mocs will play the Mountaineers on this day.  Much commotion was made at the start of last season when the Appalachian State Mountaineers beat the Michigan Wolverines at the Big House in Ann Arbor, Michigan.  For the general public, it led to claims that the game was the biggest upset in college football history. But it was not the first time a small school beat a major powerhouse in their own backyard. For Chattanooga fans, the Appy State game sparked the memory of their big defeat of the Vols in Knoxville, putting “to shame the Tennessee football team’s disasterous season.”

    March 6th, 2008

    Alex Anderson, Chattanooga Lady Mocs

SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Following a regular season in which she led the Southern Conference in scoring and helped her team achieve a perfect 18-0 league record,

Chattanooga’s Alex Anderson was named the Southern Conference Sports Media Association’s (SCSMA) women’s basketball Player of the Year. The SCSMA also selected two all-conference teams, an all-freshman team, a Freshman of the Year and a Coach of the Year.

Chattanooga coach Wes Moore was selected by the media as the Coach of the Year after guiding his squad to its third perfect SoCon season in the past five years. The Lady Mocs currently hold the nation’s longest win streak at 21 games. This marks the fifth time

Moore has been honored as Coach of the Year in his 10 seasons at the helm of the UTC program.

Wofford’s Mahagony Williams, who led all Southern Conference freshmen in both scoring (8.3 points per game) and rebounding (6.6 rebounds per game), was honored as the Freshman of the Year. Also the SoCon’s leading shot blocker with 2.03 swats per game, Williams shined down the stretch with three doubles in the final seven games, including a 19-point, 12-rebound effort against UNC Greensboro on Feb. 28.

Anderson earned Player of the Year honors for the second straight season after averaging 17.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game.

Anderson topped the 20-point mark in a game 11 times this season, including a 39-point outburst against Davidson on Feb. 4. A six-time player of the week selection during the season,

Anderson becomes the fifth player in SoCon history to be honored as the league’s top player twice.

Joining Anderson on the all-conference first team was Tierra Bumbrey of Elon, Chevon Keith of

Western Carolina, Mercedes Robinson of Davidson and Whitney Tossie of Appalachian State. Bumbrey and Tossie are both among the league leaders in points, steals and assists while Chevon Keith is the SoCon’s leading rebounder with 8.8 boards per contest. Mocs vs. Vols - Tuesday, December 4th

    November 29th, 2007

The Chattanooga Mocs basketball team took on our UT-system rival and #10 nationally ranked Tennessee Knoxville Volunteers on Tuesday, December 4th at The McKenzie Arena. The last time they played, on December 5, 2004, Chattanooga pulled out an upset in Knoxville beating the Volunteers 69-68. (view the archived article from The Chattanoogan).

This year the Vols, now under the direction of Coach Bruce Pearl, won 76-70 despite the aggressive play of the Mocs team and the energized record crowd on hand. Mocs coach John Shulman and his boys were up for the challenge and showed great poise and control, yet Tennessee’s defense caused 34 Mocs turnovers.

Thanks to all who came to support our Mocs and participated in the “Gold Rush.” As you see in the photos, you really took over McKenzie. The Mocs Athletics Department are encouraging all Chattanooga fans to continue supporting the Mocs by coming to all the other home games. For information regarding tickets, please contact the Chattanooga Mocs Athletics Department at 423/266-MOCS or 1-800-472-6050 or by visit www.gomocs.com.

The pre-game pep-rally will took place at the UTC DeSalles-Harrison Racquet Center  which was sponsored by the UTC Alumni Board of Directors and the Hamilton County Chapter of the University of Tennessee Alumni Association. LET’S GO MOCS!!
