Mission Statement
The function of the ADA committee on the campus of The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is to assist in maintaining campus compliance to the federal guidelines defined within the Americans with Disabilities Act. Perhaps, more important, is the goal of improving the campus culture for students, staff, faculty, & visitors with disabilities. Through investigation, advocacy and action, the members of this committee will insure that our campus is as accessible as possible for any person with a disability. We will investigate the current status of physical, procedural, communicative, and attitudinal accessibility; advocate consistently for the equal treatment of people with disabilities, realizing that equal does not always mean the same; and finally, we will propose action to be taken to ensure accessibility for all.
Chancellor's Charge for the ADA Committee
The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga is committed to providing a campus culture that is both embracing and knowledgeable of the diversity of our learners. A group that can be overlooked during talks of diversity is the group that represents individuals on campus with disabilities. This population comes from various backgrounds and has a plethora of experiences to share with our community, so we must make our campus accessible in every way so we can benefit from their participation. It is the charge of this committee to gain an understanding of The Americans with Disabilities Act so you can act as a sounding board for your colleagues when difficulties with accessibility become apparent. It is the concern of the entire campus community to have an environment that is open and welcoming, so the first act of this committee is to find out how accessible our campus is currently and develop a plan to make the changes as needed. I thank you for committing your valuable time to this very important task. With your hard work and the engagement of your colleagues, we will be able to say that UTC truly has a campus culture accessible to everyone.
