Student Profile - Virgilio Gozum

Fall 2010

Jacob in Kenya

Virgilio visited Muir Woods while at the 2010 national
meeting of the American Chemical Society

"A good scientist can't just look at a problem from one angle. Different ideas and perspectives have to be considered in order to solve a problem. This is where the UHON humanities curriculum can amplify science and transform it beyond facts, figures, and data into something truly greater. Furthermore, for those interested in medical science, a good physician, physical therapist or nurse cannot see a patient merely as a set of symptoms or malfunctioning organs. A patient is a person, with hopes, fears, needs, and desires. The UHON curriculum taps into this by exploring just what it is to be human. By learning to think critically and by considering the human element, one can become a better scientist, and in my case, hopefully a better optometrist in the future."

Virgilio is a senior chemistry major with a minor in psychology.

He is also a senior chemistry major with a minor in psychology. Last year, he received the Edwards Award for outstanding junior chemistry student, and he is currently employed as a teaching assistant for General Chemistry II labs. He presented his honors thesis research “Green Conversion of Aldehydes Into Nitriles” at the 2010 National Meeting of the American Chemical Society in San Francisco. He is a member of Gamma Sigma Epsilon (the chemistry honor society).

But he's not just a science geek--he serves as historian for Mortar Board Honor Society and has been elected to the UHON Council for all four years at UTC, serving as treasurer last year and vice president for the 2010-2011 academic year. He’s an active member of UTC’s Relay for Life team, and has participated in the Academic Trivia Association and intramural soccer, flag football and Ultimate Frisbee. He is also one of the truly creative people in our UHON family; he was a member of UHON’s winning All Sing musical group in 2009, and he is a talented free-lance photographer.

Virgilio is a graduate of Madison Academic High School in Jackson, TN
