Fall 2008 Events

Date Auction - November 6

The UHON Council sponsored its annual Charity Date Auction, with a theme for 2008 of "America, We're Beautiful." Thirty-two beautiful Americans (students, faculty, staff and parents) dressed as some kind of patriotic or inherently American figure and offered their time and company for bidding. Each individual or group was matched with donated "dates" (home-cooked meals or meals and entertainment passes from local restaurants and businesses), often valued at $100 or more. The event also included raffles and T-shirt sales to raise even more money. The $3,000 raised will benefit the Family Housing and Learning Center run by the Chattanooga Community Kitchen.

Halloween Party and Trick or Cans - October 30 & 31

On October 30, the UHON Council Socal Committee sponsored its usual Halloween party in the Reading Room, with lots of scary costumed creatures in attendance. Many of those creatures donned their costumes again on October 31 for the "Trick or Cans" food drive. Students from the UHON Program and the Mortar Board Honor Society visited preselected neighborhoods to collect canned goods for the Chattanooga Area Food Bank. The drive raised 3,035 pounds of food for needy families in our community.

Political Panel - October 28

University Honors program students organized a Political Panel discussion to explore some of the issues in the presidential election and the actual platforms and policies of the candidates. The aim of the event was to cut out all of the sound byte rhetoric and provide substantive information that is not available through conventional political campaign coverage. UTC faculty members presented a nonpartisan overview of the relevant issues and problems in their own fields and a factual statement of the two candidates' platforms. Dr. Fouad Moughrabi of the Political Science Department discussed foreign policy issues, Dr. Bento Lobo of the Finance Department discussed the economy, Dr. Clifton Cleaveland of the University Honors Program and UT College of Medicine discussed health care, Dr. Joanie Sompayrac of the Accounting Department and the University Honors Program discussed the Supreme Court, and Dr. Aborn of the Biological and Environmental Sciences Department discussed the environment.

Voter Registration - October

The UHON Program joined with the Political Science Club, the College Republicans and the College Democrats to register new voters among the UTC student body and provide information about local polling places and absentee and early voting procedures. Approximately 900 students were registered to vote during the ten day drive.
