Student Profile - Craig Hawkins
June 2009

"I believe that the University Honors Program at UTC has enhanced and will continue to enhance my college experience by offering me the opportunity to be a part of an amazing community where I can interact with people who love learning, discussing big ideas, and experiencing life. The most important aspect of UHON to me thus far has been the variety of services offered through the program. Whether I need tutoring, want to become a tutor, desire to become a student assistant, need to talk to an experienced and helpful adult, or long to get involved with community service activities or social events, I know I have an outlet to do so through the Honors Program."

Greeting
Craig and Olivia Banner, one of his fellow orientation leaders, greeting freshmen at Orientation Check-In

Craig is a junior from Chattanooga, TN, majoring in secondary math education with a minor in Spanish.

His academic work in math has been enhanced by his Spring 2009 UHON student assistantship with Dr. Stephen Kuhn, where he created and recorded math tutorial videos to accompany online homework assignments. He has already been called upon to tutor fellow UHON students in calculus, and he'll begin work as a general math tutor in UTC's Math Lab in the fall.

But he's not just a math geek--Craig has been very active on campus and in the community. He was a member of the UTC Freshman Senate and has served on the UHON Council Social Committee and Community Service Committee. He will serve on the UHON Council as a junior class representative for the 2009-2010 academic year. And this summer he's a UTC Student Orientation Leader, helping new freshmen and transfer students get acquainted with the campus and each other.

Through UTC's Teacher Preparation Academy, Craig has already begun exploring his future profession, volunteering with the Kids Like You, Kids Like Me program at the Chattanooga Creative Discovery Museum, a program designed to promote awareness about the concerns and abilities of physically challenged kids. He also has used his knowledge of Spanish to assist with English as a Second Language classroom projects at East Ridge High School, and he plans to add the ESOL endorsement to his education major program.

If you would like more information from Craig about his experience at UTC, email him at James-C-Hawkins@utc.edu.
