Student Profile - Melody Dale
June 2009

"The University Honors Program has helped shape me into the person I am today. It has definitely prepared me for the future; not only through its challenging courses but through the relationships I have built with my peers and advisors. When I came into the program as a freshman, I never thought I would be capable of having a leadership role in college. UHON has not only encouraged me to be my best but has also allowed me to take on many leadership roles within the program as well as in other campus organizations. UHON has offered me so much opportunity in such a short period of time in my life. I am forever grateful and will miss such a diverse, challenging, and supportive environment when I graduate"

Melody is a senior Spanish major, with a minor in marketing. She has pursued both of these academic areas beyond the classroom, studying Spanish in both Costa Rica and Alcala' de Henares, Spain, during the summers of 2006 and 2008, respectively, and during the Fall of 2008 serving as a UHON Student Research Assistant to Dr. Keith Richards, Asst. Professor of Marketing, helping with research on journal articles in sales and sales managment.

But her academic interests don't end with Spanish and marketing. Beginning with her freshman year, Melody has been a valued part of both the choral and orchestral music programs. In fall 2007 she worked as a teaching assistant in Cadek Conservatory's String Project, promoting string education among children in the Chattanooga area. She is a member of the Chattanooga Chamber Singers, UTC's select mixed-voice choir. The UHON community has benefited from her musical talents through her leadership of the UHON All Sing team and her wonderful performances at the UHON Council Spring Showcases.

Melody has served in many leadership roles both on campus and in the community. For the past two years she has headed up the campus Relay for Life team to raise awareness and funds for the American Cancer Society. As the chair of the UHON Council's Social Committee for 2008-2009, she helped organize the annual Date Auction fund-raiser benefitting the Chattanooga Family Housing and Learning Center. She has volunteered with the campus Habitat for Humanity chapter and put her Spanish language knowledge to good use with La Plaza Comunitaria, an organization providing classes and tutoring for Spanish-speaking residents who are seeking help with learning English, getting a GED, and improving their work and life skills.

In her senior year, Melody will be again serving on the UHON Council, and no doubt will continue to grace us with her lovely voice and her determined leadership.
