Program of study
B.A. in Theatre
The curriculum for the B.A. in Theatre is grounded in the philosophy of the liberal arts. Beyond the requirement of a strong University general education core, the department’s curriculum includes a foundation in the full instrument of the theatre to provide a broad-based education within the discipline. We emphasize developing a sense of history, an awareness of the theatre as a reflection of complex forces in society, and the ability to think critically –to question and analyze rather than to absorb facts passively.
A junior year directing sequence provides the student with opportunity to synthesize foundation skills and understandings to the art of creating theatrical performance. Upper level electives and directed studies courses allow the students to pursue individual interests and focus. The core of the program is six semesters of applied work in our performance and production program. Our goal is to produce graduates capable of applying their education to a full range of career and personal pursuits as well as to prepare them to enter the profession as interns and apprentices at first class theatre institutions or to pursue advanced training in graduate or professional schools.
