Biography
Harriet Bias-Insignares was born on October 24, 1943 in Savannah, GA. She attended Fisk University for her B.A. (1964), the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater for her M.S.T. (1972), and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, for her Ph.D. (1980). Bias-Insignares lives in Nashville, Tennessee with her family, where she's been teaching at Tennessee State University since 1977. Additionally, she has served as Tennessee's Official State Poet and Arts Advocate since 1977, and she was named the first Poet Laureate of Nashville in 2007. Bias-Insignares has contributed to her community, as well, in various ways, including but not limited to, founding and serving as president for Poetry in Motion and founding the Youth Journalism Congress at TSU.
