Roy Blount, Jr. (b. 1941)

Biography

Roy Alton Blount, Jr. was born on October 4, 1941 in Indianapolis, Indiana and raised in Decatur, Georgia. Blount attended Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he graduated with his B.A. in 1963; he then continued to Harvard University to receive his M.A. in 1964. He worked as a newspaper reported in Georgia and Louisiana before taking a position as a staff writer and editor for Sports Illustrated in 1968, where he stayed until 1975. In 1982, he became an editor and contributor to the Atlantic Monthly. Blount has written screenplays and songs as well as prose. He has even acted, appearing in his own one-man show in the 1980's. He considers himself a Southern man and is a member of the Fellowship of Southern Writers, in addition to his duties as President of the Author's Guild. He regularly performs with his band, The Rock Bottom Remainders, a group of notable writers who enjoy music and formed a band. They also perform a benefit concert once a year to help literacy.
