Differentiated Instruction in Science for General

                                  and Special Educators Workshop

Funded by the Tennessee Higher Education Commission

Dr. Sandy Watson and Dr. Linda Johnston, Project Directors

This workshop offered tools and strategies for differentiation of science instruction for both general and special education teachers in grades 4 & 5 who will serve as change agents for delivery of science instruction within their school systems.  Through this 40-hour weeklong workshop, 26 teachers received professional development in the area of science instruction and learned how to adapt the instruction to the individual needs of each student.  The workshop focused on the area of physical science in these grades and provided a very hands-on approach for delivery and differentiation of instructional strategies for a variety of concepts.  An important component of this workshop was the use of Assistive Technology (AT) software.  Participants from this workshop were from Grundy, Hamilton, Marion, and Sequatchie counties. Each participant received three science modules, AT software, and a start-up chemical and equipment package for demonstration and experimentation purposes.  UTC works very closely with each of the counties to enrich the learning environment for both regular and special education students.
