Determining Your English and Math Courses

Now that you’ve been accepted to UTC, you need to prepare for your first year. The most important step is for you to think about courses you want to take your first semester.  When you complete the three steps outlined below, UTC faculty and staff will be able to prepare a schedule for you prior to your attending orientation. Here are the steps:
1.  Determine which English course you need.
2.  Determine which Math course you need.
3.  Complete the Academic Interest Questionnaire  (AIQ) for your intended major.

1. Determine which English course you need.

At UTC your Freshman English course is determined by your ACT English sub-score.  Please refer to the following chart to know which course to take.

ACT ENGLISH SUBSCORE

If you have an ACT English sub-score between 22-24, click here for more information and to take the English Directed Self Placement.

2. Determine which Math course you need

Your major determines which math course you must take, and your ACT Math sub-score determines your readiness to take the course your major requires. Therefore, you should look at the major you’re planning to pursue at UTC to see which math course you need. Click here to review math requirements for your major and determine which course you need.

3. Complete your Academic Interest Questionnaire (AIQ)

The Academic Interest Questionnaire is a survey designed to gather information necessary for UTC Academic Advisors to properly build your Fall 2012 schedule before you come to orientation. You will be pre-registered for your courses based on your intended major (as indicated from your Academic Interest Questionnaire), your placement scores, and information you provide for us in this survey. We will do our best to register you for classes based on your answers to the AIQ. The schedule created for you will provide a strong start for your academic journey and will put you on the right path to academic success. You will be given a copy of your Fall 2012 schedule at Orientation where you will have the opportunity to speak with an experienced Academic Advisor about your schedule. By May 2nd, please complete an AIQ for your chosen major. Your course schedule for the Fall will not be created without this essential information. You may have other items to complete, so go to the Orientation website for a checklist: http://www.utc.edu/Administration/orientation.
