Dr. Shela Van Ness earned her MA and Ph.D.degrees in Sociology from Kent State University, with specialties in Corrections, Criminology, Deviant Behavior and Urban Studies. Before coming to UTC, Dr. Van Ness worked in several Ohio correctional institutions doing counseling, management and research projects in habilitation.
She is currently engaged in national research and service projects on school violence prevention, and drug/alcohol prevention in partnership with local schools.
In the community she is active wtih the local Endeavors Program for ex-offenders, the Interfaith Homeless Project, Beyond the Bars support group for families of incarcerated persons, the Domestic Violence Coalition, the death penalty abolition movement, and her church.
