Dr. Radu usually teaches courses in HBSE, macro social work, and social work research and data analysis. She also has a special interest and committment to the principles of social justice, peace, and reconciliation on personal, community, and global levels.Her practice and research focuses primarily on aging issues including

  • Ageism at interpersonal, group, institutional, and societal levels
  • Attitudes and perceptions of social work students towards older adults
  • Knowledge and skill competency needs of professional social workers practicing in healthcare and aging settings
  • Service learning and higher education (specifically, experiential learning models)                 

She serves on the Domestic Violence Coalition Board and the Highland Park Neighborhood Association Board.  She is an invited member of the SE TN Elder Abuse Coalition and the Hamilton County Adult Protective Services Multidisciplinary Team.  She is a frequent presenter on aging issues in the southeastern United States.  She is active in the statewide National Association of Social Workers (NASW) and co-chaired the annual Social Work Day on the Hill (SWDOTH) event in Nashville from 2005-2007.  She and her 2006 SWDOTH co-chair, Dr. Jenny Jones from the UT Nashville College of Social Work were awarded the 2006 Social Worker(s) of the Year from the TN NASW chapter. Dr. Radu is also the webmaster for a local social work website designed specifically for professional social workers in southeast TN:  www.chattsocialwk.com.

She recently completed her doctoral work at Case Western Reserve University in the Mandel School of Applied Social Sciences and received a PhD in Social Welfare; her dissertation research focused on integrating aging content into a BSW curriculum.  As a doctoral student, she was awarded a Research Mentorship Award in 2001 to identify and compile measurement tools related to ageism and perceptions of older adults.  She has presented numerous peer-reviewed presentations at various conferences including the Bachelor Program Director (BPD) annual meeting, the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education, the North Carolina Conference on Aging, and the national Alzheimer's Association.

She is married to Uwe who is a senior computer programmer at the TN Valley Authority (TVA).  They have 9-year old twins, Katie and Max, who are in the fourth grade at a local magnet school. The Radu family lives in a 110 year old vintage home in the diverse and historical neighborhood of Highland Park.
