Kathy Purnell was ORIGINALLY born in London, UK Her parents moved to the UK in 1957 from a lovely Island called Barbados. She is the youngest in a family of 6, and her siblings currently reside in London, England.   She received her MSW degree from Alabama A & M University were she specialized in children and families.  She has over 10 years of practice experience working with a wide variety of populations including at risk children in day care settings, children and adolescents in state custody, ex-juvenile offenders, adults and children with learning disabilities in both day and residential settings, older adults, and college students.

She has a special expertise in diversity issues and working with young adults and families.  She has developed numerous workshops and psychoeducational programs including a popular 8-week experience entitled “The Journey”  which addresses the emotional, spiritual and psychological needs of young adults.  She has taught social welfare policy courses, human sexuality and cultural anthropology courses, and child welfare certification courses.  Her style of teaching is creative and experiential and she believes in assisting students with developing innovative ways to think and learn.

She is married to her sweetheart, Franklin and they are the proud parents of three lovely children –Kafan, who is 7 years old, and the twins-Ethan & Iman (6 years old).  She enjoys candid photography, planning special events, flower arranging, eating good food and having a laugh! She especially enjoys English/Indian movies. Favorite movies include-“Bend It Like Beckham” & “Lagaan.”
