Kathy G. Purnell, MSW originates from London, England and celebrates her African-Caribbean/British heritage! She is an experienced, down-to earth social work educator and practitioner with over 15 years of practice experience working with diverse individuals, families, groups and communities.
She finds creative and innovative methods to present sensitive topics in her classes. She has taught Child Welfare, Cultural Anthropology, Social Welfare, Introduction to the Social Work Experience, Social Work with Special Populations, Interviewing Skills, Social Work with Groups, Social Work Ability I, Field Education I & II, and Integrative Field Seminar I & II.
She received her undergraduate and Master's degrees from two prominent Historically Black Institutions (Oakwood University and Alabama A & M University) where she specialized in working with vulnerable children and families.
She has a background in program development, program coordination and curriculum development. She holds several leadership positions within the faith and professional communities. She has a special expertise in group dynamics, adjustment disorders, conflict resolution, cultural diversity, program development and teaching practice skills.
She currently coordinates the Field Education component of the UTC Social Work undergraduate program and offers consultation and professional development workshops to educational entities within Hamilton County and local social service agencies. Kathy is currently a doctoral candidate in Education & Professional studies where she is integrating her passion for diversity and education.
She is married to Franklin and they currently reside in Tennessee with their three children.
