Social work is an interesting, challenging, and fast-growing career area.  The U. S. Dept. of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the following significant facts about social work careers:

Significant Points
  • About 9 out of 10 jobs were in health care and social assistance industries, as well as State and local government agencies.
  • While a bachelor’s degree is the minimum requirement, a master’s degree in social work or a related field has become the standard for many positions.
  • Employment is projected to grow faster than average.
  • Competition for jobs is expected in cities, but opportunities should be good in rural areas.

A new workforce study on social work released March 9, 2006 projects a shortage of qualified, professional social workers to meet the needs of all Americans, particularly those who are vulnerable and at-risk.  The social work profession needs YOU and other future social workers to meet this growing professional need.

The National Association of Social Workers is the largest membership organization of professional social workers in the world, with 153,000 members. NASW works to enhance the professional growth and development of its members, to create and maintain professional standards, and to advance sound social policies.

NASW has an excellent section that provides much more detailed information about specific areas of social work practice:
