Sandy Cole has been named director of the Center for Community Career Education, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary year at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.
J. Kevin Ford, UTC Director of Choral Activities, has been named a state officer in the Tennessee division of the American Choral Directors Association, the premier national association for choral directors. He is serving as Repertoire and Standards Chair for Community Based Choral Ensembles. One of his tasks will be to build a statewide database of community choruses to be combined with other states to form a national directory. Ford was also invited to be a judge for the Alabama State High School Choral Festival in spring 2005.
Karen Henderson, theatre and speech, was quoted in an article about the antics of American Idol Judge Simon Cowell, written by Michael Davis for TV Guide.
Ralph Hood, psychology, served as editor of the recently released book Handling Serpents by Pastor Jimmy Morrow, a native Appalachian, pastor, and long-time serpent handler. The book explores the history of serpent handling.
James Inman, English, was the recipient of the 2005 Southeastern Writing Center Association Achievement Award. He has been invited to speak at the 2006 SWCA conference at Duke University.
Richard Jackson, English Department, has published a book of poems, Half-Lives: Petrarchan Poems (Autumn House, Pittsburgh, PA), adaptations based on Petrarch's poems, and also a chapbook in the prestigious by-invitation-only Greatest Hits series, Richard Jackson's Greatest Hits: 1980-2004, a Puddinghouse Publications in Columbus, Ohio. His recent and forthcoming essays and poems appear in Reviled (on a new way to teach writing), Georgia Review, TriQuarterly, Runes and other journals and he will chair a panel and participate on another at the upcoming AWP Conference in Seattle and the Ropewalk Conference in Indiana. He has also been invited to read at two conferences overseas, one in Prague, the other in Slovenia.
Linda Orth, who has served as Interim Director of the Records and Registration Office for two years, has been named the University Registrar. Dr. Deborah Arfken served as the Interim University Registrar for the last two years, in addition to her responsibilities as Dean of the Graduate School. Orth’s appointment as Registrar will allow Arfken more time to devote to her position as Dean of the Graduate School.
Joseph Owino, UC Foundation Associate Professor and Cecelia Wigal, UC Foundation Associate Professor served as Conference Site Chair and Conference Technical Program Chair, respectively for the American Society of Engineering Education Southeastern Section (ASEE-SE) Annual Meeting held recently at UTC.
Oralia Preble-Niemi was named one of the University of North Carolina's Distinguished Graduate Alumni during the celebration of the University's centenary. Preble-Niemi has also edited a recently published book of critical essays on Guatemalan literature, Ilustres autores guatemaltecos de los siglos XIX y XX.
The Probasco Chair of Free Enterprise and The Association of Private Enterprise Education presented a national conference on “Teaching Economics” in Orlando, Florida. Nationally recognized economists and award-winning high school economic teachers presented sessions to provide high school and university teachers with exposure to some of the latest information in specific areas of economics instruction.
Sydney Roberts, costume designer, Theatre and Speech, has designed costumes for Theatrical Outfit’s musical production of HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY in Atlanta. Theatrical Outfit will present the hit musical HANK WILLIAMS: LOST HIGHWAY from May 7 through June 12, 2005 to close the company’s first season in its new home at The Balzer Theater at Herren’s. The show follows Hank Sr.’s life from his teen years through his successful years, and finally to his untimely death at age 29.
Booker T. Scruggs, II, Upward Bound director, has recently recorded a cd, entitled "A Salute to The Duke," which is a collection of ten songs written or co-written by Duke Ellington. Sales of the cd support scholarship efforts of the Southeastern Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel (a regional organization of Upward Bound and other TRIO personnel).
Victoria Steinberg, Foreign Languages and Literatures; Karen Adsit, Teaching Resource Center; John Fulmer, Business Administration; Barbara Norwood, Nursing; Stacy Ray, Theatre and Speech; and Joe Wilferth, English comprise the Quality Enhancement Plan Team, which will define student engagement on the campus. The effort is one of the requirements for the campus’ accreditation by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS).
Mike Russell, history, was quoted extensively for a piece entitled “Blood on the Streets; Charleston’s violent history has deep roots” by Will Moredock, who writes “Views” for Front Line Press of Charleston, South Carolina.
Mary Tanner, dean and professor of Health, Education and Professional Studies, was honored by Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga. Tanner was recognized as a woman who has changed Chattanooga at the 2005 Women’s History Month Unbought and Unbossed Breakfast and Awards Presentation in memory of Shirley Chisholm, the first African-American woman elected to Congress, and the first African-American major-party candidate for the Presidency.
University Relations Office won a Silver Award for the Chancellor’s Annual Report to the UC Foundation and a Silver Award for the Lupton Report in the 2004 Tennessee College Public Relations Association (TCPRA) Awards.
New faculty department heads were recently announced. They include:
Dr. Verbie Lovorn Prevost, Katharine Pryor Professor of English, has been appointed the head of the Department of English, after serving as acting head of the department.
Dr. Andy Novobilski, who has been named head of the Department of Computer Science, where he has been serving as acting head of the department.
Dr. Gail Meyer is the first woman to be named chair of the Department of Chemistry.
Dr. Kaye McClung, DBA, MTA, CPA has been named head of the Department of Accounting and Finance.
Chris Smith, Nursing, has been named Family Nurse Practitioner Coordinator.
