You can show your appreciation by nominating that person for the Blue Ribbon
Award. A committee appointed by the chancellor will select monthly an award
winner who exhibits outstanding service to others. Nominations should be specific
in identifying incidents or situations that show the nominee has served his/her
customers with special distinction.

All non-faculty staff (full or part-time) with at least one year's regular service are eligible for the award. Any UTC faculty, staff, student, alumnus, or member of the community are invited to submit nominations.
Blue Ribbon Winners, 2011
Terry Sanford, Administrative Support Assistant in the Department of Music has gone above and beyond his job requirements often, according to Jooyong Ahn, Associate Professor of music. “Terry not only helps in the office, he also helps students when they need a pianist to accompany them,” Ahn said. When a department staff person was hospitalized, Sanford graciously absorbed her job responsibilities, according to Ahn. Ahn says there are many more examples of Sanford’s supportive work for the Department of Music, which make him an excellent choice for the January 2011 Blue Ribbon winner.
February, March, April
Anne Brunsgaard, Will Glass, and Cheryl Van Mater became the champions of students and faculty in need during the snow event of January 2011. According to Theresa Liedtka, Dean of the Lupton Library, when snow shut down the campus for days she was bombarded with email requests to access the library’s resources. Brunsgaard, Glass and Van Mater comprise the library’s Sunday Team. When the weather began to clear, Liedtka asked if they would be willing to come to campus to work. “All three replied ‘yes’ without a moment’s hesitation,” Liedtka said. “I, and the faculty and staff, are very lucky to have these selfless, dedicated staff member’s as part of our community.”
When Jeanine Snowden, Administrative Specialist, Faculty Records, was hired in February 2011 as Administrative Specialist I for Faculty Records, she not only took on new responsibilities, she transformed a “dark, smelly and really unacceptable work space” to an office that’s “presentable while saving the University money,” according to Cindy Williams, Administrative Specialist II. According to Williams, the position Snowden accepted had been vacant since 2009 and the basement workspace in Race Hall where Snowden was assigned had turned into “a dumping ground for computers, unused office equipment and storage for old documentation.” After shelving was installed and a new configuration made the office safer, Snowden cleared the clutter and got to work. She enlisted the help of dean’s administrative assistants to better understand her duties; she located documentation to assist her; she repaired and brightened surplus furniture, often giving up lunch hours to make a more inviting space. “Jeanine continues to search for ways to make her job more efficient and productive. She is currently putting together an Office Procedures Manual for Faculty Records. This should help make things easier for her or anyone else that is responsible for processing and maintaining faculty records,” Williams said.
Charles Scott, Manager of Business Services in the UTC Purchasing Department, helped Jim Pulliam, Manager of Safety and Risk Management, weather an accounting storm . Pulliam needed immediate assistance to initiate a purchase requisition. After working to resolve the confusion for some time by phone, Scott said he would walk over to Pulliam’s office immediately to help. “Charles walked over on a 97 degree day with an umbrella, as we were experiencing summer rains. With his constant good humor, he worked out the problems we were facing. That kind of commitment is a credit to the entire University and sets the standard for all of us to follow,” Pulliam said.
Carolyn Edwards, Building Services, recently did her best to help restore something valuable to a stranger. Valerah Hodges in UTC Purchasing nominated Edwards for the Blue Ribbon Award, saying she is “very thorough in her work at UTC” and conducts herself in an honorable way on and off campus. “Carolyn is not only a great UTC employee but an honest citizen, and we should be very proud of her,” Hodges said.
Students on the receiving end of Merrium Carver’s customer service are grateful! The housing staff member “is always willing, helpful, never complains and has the biggest heart of anyone I’ve ever met,” said Mary Jean Broyles. A student recently wrote an email thanking Merrium for assisting her in finding new living arrangements.

Becca McCashin and Doris Roensch, Coordinator of the School of Education and Administrative Specialist, respectively, always work very hard to keep faculty and students in the Learning and Leadership Doctoral program informed, organized, and happy. Five faculty members in the program say the two worked through a huge challenge of flooding in Pfeiffer Hall. In early June, flooding occurred while the roof was being repaired. Water damaged many faculty offices, meeting rooms, computers, printers, files, folders, and furniture. “Becca and Doris helped move faculty to better temporary quarters, helped faculty continue to work with students, carried on with routine office chores without missing a beat, and managed to organize and implement an induction program for more than 30 new doctoral students and more than ten faculty members without the new students even knowing there had been a crisis. Throughout this two month period, Becca and Doris remained calm, professional, even cheerful, often in the face of great frustration vented upon them from displaced faculty. Because of their dedicated, selfless, patient intervention, the Pfeiffer Flood of summer 2011 was merely a minor annoyance rather than the total catastrophe it could have been.”
Jack Pitkin, Lab Coordinator for Physics, Geology and Astronomy and operations manager of the Jones Observatory, was asked to conduct informational and educational lessons for the 2011 Challenger Center campers last summer at the Jones Observatory. The lessons were delivered on schedule, allowing the classes to go smoothly. “We prescribed the when and how long, together with our main camp theme. Jack took care of all the rest. He was always prepared and waiting when we arrived,” said Bill Floyd, Challenger Center Flight Director. A full 1.5-hour program was professionally presented in the early afternoon timeframe during three different camps with effortless coordination made between the Challenger Center and Pitkin, Floyd said. Campers really enjoyed the field trip off campus where they learned about telescopes and saw the planetarium show. “Jack deserves this award for not only greatly assisting other UTC colleagues and departments with their programs, but for positively impacting/encouraging many middle schoolers towards advanced levels of science,” said Floyd.
Kristen Carnell, IT Administrator III, Systems Operations & Security, was nominated by her supervisor, Michael Dinkins, Director, ITD/Systems Operations & Security. “Kristen has provided outstanding service to UTC by leading two very successful projects, the migration of all students from the legacy NetMail system to MocsMail+ (Google Apps for Education) system and the migration of employees from legacy email systems into the Exchange 2010 email service. Kristen led an implementation team consisting of ITD Systems Operations and Help Desk personnel that migrated over 28,000 student (and various other) accounts and 2,000 employee accounts with very few technical issues. Her effort and her professionalism are representative of the spirit and criteria of Chancellor Brown’s Blue Ribbon Award program, and she is most deserving,” Dinkins said.
