Neslihan Alp has served as the faculty advisor of the IIE Student Chapter, which recently gained national recognition with the Gold Award from the Institute of Industrial Engineers (IIE), honoring student achievement during the 2003-2004 academic year.

Melissa Anyiwo, history, Sharon Hill, political science, and Talia Welsh, philosophy and religion participated in "Mammies and Jezebels: Persistent Images of Women in the 21 st Century, an interdisciplinary panel at the Hawaii International Conference of Social Studies." Three separate papers were presented: "Oprah: The NeoMammy," "The Legacy of Mammy and Jezebel Continues: The Impact of Stereotypes on Women in Leadership Positions," and "The Diversity of Desirable Bodies." Each paper focused on different aspects of racial and gender-based stereotypes.

Richard Becherer, Lawrence Ettkin, and Michael Jones, Marketing and Entrepreneurship, conducted research studies for the Chattanooga Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB) to assess visitors’ experiences in Chattanooga and determine the effectiveness of CVB advertising and promotions.

J. Hill Craddock, biological and environmental sciences, was the subject of a feature story in Smithsonian magazine. The Davenport Associate Professor in Biology introduced readers to his research at Bendabout Farm outside Chattanooga, where he works to breed a blight-resistant hybrid of Asian-American chestnut trees. Craddock’s work was also featured in the latest issue of Tennessee Conservationist.

Parthasarati Dileepan, Management, and Tom Gavin, Accounting, won a "Certificate of Merit" for the article “Work-Related Stress of Management Accountants” that was published in Strategic Finance.

John Fulmer, Associate Dean, College of Business Administration, and Vance Lesseig, Finance, received inquiries from practitioners nationwide about their "15 year versus 30 year" mortgage article that appeared in Journal of Financial Planning.

William Gautier, head coach of cross country, was named Southern Conference Coach of the Year for the fifth time as the women’s head coach and third time as head coach of the men’s squad. This marks the second time in his career at UTC that Gautier has earned the honor for both squads in the same season. He was men’s and women’s coach of the year in 1998, the last time both teams claimed the title in the same season.

Greg Grant, chemistry, was an invited guest at the National ACS Convention in Philadelphia. He participated in the combined anniversaries of the founding of the Petroleum Research Fund and the first grant awards. Grant was asked to write a brief essay about the impact that the PRF has had on his research program.

Michael Jones, Marketing, and Vance Lesseig, Finance, were quoted in Consumer Reports, Time magazine and USA Today for articles concerning mutual fund performance.

Bento Lobo, Finance, compiled essays by his students regarding deflation in Japan and featured them in a Chattanooga Times Free Press newspaper article.

Mark Mendenhall, Management, has written two books; Handbook of Global Management: A Guide to Managing Complexity is published by Blackwell Publishing and is currently available. Stanford University Press will soon publish Managing Culture and Human Resources in Mergers and Acquisitions.

Claire McCullough has been promoted to full professor of engineering, making her the first female full professor in the history of engineering at UTC. Dr. Stephanie Smullen in computer science is the only other female full professor in the College of Engineering and Computer Science. According to an article in PRISM, the journal published by the American Society of Engineering Education, the percentage of female full professors nationwide is slightly more than 5 percent.

Brian Ribeiro, philosophy and religion, has won the distinguished and highly competitive Rockefeller Prize, recognizing the best unpublished article-length paper by a philosopher who does not hold a tenure-track academic position at the time the paper is submitted. This national prize is awarded once every two years by the American Philosophical Association (APA). Since receiving the award, Ribeiro has accepted a tenure-track position at UTC.

Sydney Roberts, theatre and speech, is spending winter break designing The Wiz for True Colors Theatre Company in Atlanta. The show willl be directed by Kenny Leon, whose revival of A Raisin In The Sun won two Tony Awards this year on Broadway. Several senior theatre students will assist her on the project.

Felicia B. Sturzer, foreign languages, serves on the Executive Board of the Southeastern American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies and the Editorial Board of Women in French Studies and XVIII New Perspectives on the Eighteenth Century.

The Health Sciences Coalition from the College of Health, Education and Professional Studies have invited students, faculty and staff to participate in UTC On The Move, a sister program to the Tennessee On The Move program announced by Dr. John Petersen, UT President last month. Both programs are designed to help achieve healthier lifestyles. A walking program and tips for cutting caloric intake were among the first efforts by the coalition to promote UTC On The Move.

The Lupton Library's Electronic Resource Committee is evaluating new databases in support of the Biological and Environmental Sciences programs at UTC.

Faculty Senate Officers

Richard Rice, professor of history, and Director of the Asia Project from 1985-present, has been elected president of the UTC Faculty Senate.

Additionally, these faculty members are new officers of the Faculty Senate:

First Vice President: Randy Walker, UC Foundation Associate Professor, physical therapy

Second Vice President: Matt Greenwell: UC Foundation Associate Professor, head of the Department of Art

Secretary of the Senate: Betsy Darken, professor of mathematics

Secretary of the Full Faculty: Marcia Noe, Coordinator and professor of English and professor of Women’s Studies
