Financial Aid
The Department of Psychology and the University offer several
opportunities for financial assistance. These opportunities include fellowships,
teaching assistantships, and graduate assistantships.
Department Graduate Assistantships
The department offers a limited number of half-time graduate
assistantships each year on a competitive basis. Assistantships are awarded on
the basis of ability and academic excellence. Each assistantship includes a
stipend (in 1997-98, $1100/semester) and tuition waiver (6 hours of course
work). Students who are awarded assistantships are required to assist faculty
with teaching or research responsibilities for 10 hours per week. All students
who plan to enroll full time in the graduate psychology program are
automatically considered for these assistantships. In addition, the University
sometimes has openings for graduate assistants in other areas. Information and
application materials may be obtained by writing to the Graduate Office.
Teaching Assignments
The department offers a limited number of teaching
assignments. Students fulfilling these assignments act as lab assistants,
section leaders for the Psychology 101 course, and/or other related teaching
duty. These assignments are typically compensated at a rate of $500/semester.
All full-time students who are accepted to the I/O program are automatically
considered for these awards.
University Minority Fellowships
The University offers minority fellowships targeted
specifically towards Black students. These fellowships include stipends and
tuition waivers. Students who receive these fellowships are not required to work
during the first year of their graduate study. However, during their second
year, they are required to work with faculty members on research and related
responsibilities.
Further information on available scholarships, grants, and
low-interest loans is available from the Graduate Office and/or the Financial
Aid Office of the University.
