Advisement for Pre-Nursing & Nursing Majors
Advisement for Potential students
• Campus tour visits/appointments with potential and transfer students visiting the School of Nursing will be seen by the Program Coordinator for the School of Nursing Undergraduate Program (Program Coordinator).
• The Program Coordinator will work with the UTC Admissions office to schedule monthly information sessions for prospective students.
Advisement for Pre-Nursing Freshman
• The University requires all freshman to be advised by the UTC Center for Academic Student Success (CASS).
• Freshman pre-nursing majors advised by CASS will be assigned to the School of Nursing Program Coordinator for advisement after their freshman year is completed if they have a 2.75 GPA.
Advisement for Pre-Nursing Sophomores, Juniors, Seniors and Post-Baccalaureate
• Pre-nursing sophomore, junior, senior and post-baccalaureate students will be advised every fall for the entire academic year by the Program Coordinator. Students will develop a plan of study for applying to the School of Nursing. Students will not be required to meet again in the spring for advisement if they remain on track with their plan of study developed in the fall. A copy of the students’ plan of study and CAPP will be kept on file in the School of Nursing advisement office. Students needing to meet in the spring or those off track from their plan of study will meet with the Program Coordinator.
Advisement for Students in the Major
• Student in the nursing major taking nursing coursework will be assigned to a nursing faculty member for advisement. Nursing faculty will be assigned 10-15 students in the major to mentor and advise on schedules and coursework for the next semester. Nursing faculty will also be responsible for setting up a plan of study for students to finish any general education requirements they may have left. Students will be assigned to the same faculty mentor throughout the nursing program, meeting at least once each semester.
• Freshmen admitted to the major taking pre-requisite and general education coursework will be assigned to a nursing faculty member for advisement. Nursing faculty will be assigned 10-12 freshmen to mentor and advise as they prepare to begin the nursing major course work and throughout the program. Student and faculty will meet each semester and other times as needed. These students also must meet with the Program Coordinator once per semester to review their plan of study.
