Professor Scott Monterde is the Mary B Jackson Graduate Professor for recognition of his excellence in teaching graduate-level courses. Professor Monterde is an outstanding example of a faculty who marries theory and scientific principles to actual clinical practice and issues in all of his lectures and, in his clinical practice when working one-on-one with nurse anesthesia students. He seeks out actual anesthetic cases and designs case study presentations into his lectures in not only various courses, but in clinical case conference as well. He spends many hours looking at current evidenced base literature relating to the case and brings the "real world" of practice into the classroom setting for some very lively and enlightening discussions with the students. Students have shared with me that there have been many nights, when they are on call and happen to go up to the nurse anesthesia lounge, they find Scott still working in his office on lectures or case study preparations.

Dr. Martina Harris was selected as the Mary B. Jackson Undergraduate Professor in recognition of her excellence in teaching. Dr Harris’s approach to education is scholarly. She looks at her courses in the context of the level, and of the curriculum, and uses evidence for decision-making. Dr. Harris is always eager to explore innovations in teaching methodologies, but with a pilot test first, and then evaluation. She is never so attached to an idea that she cannot let go, i.e., she is willing to go where the evaluations take her. Since becoming coordinator of the clinical course, she has introduced much needed standardized procedures and documentation in evaluation and skills check-off. Her skills check-off procedure was adopted by the curriculum committee (and subsequently by faculty) for all clinical courses. As a level coordinator, she has been responsible for coordinating important changes that incorporate all courses, which strengthened the student experiences. Most importantly, Dr. Harris has a keen ability to connect with students. When teaching, she has excellent command of the content and the classroom is alive and actively engaged! By the end of the first week of a semester, she knows the names of, and something unique about, each student. In the clinical arena, students regularly report how much they “love clinical” with Dr. Harris. She is able to guide them gently into their first clinical experiences, but also pushes them beyond their “comfort zone.” Her ability to evaluate students in clinical has become refined over the last few years, and I would say her clinical judgment is one of the best in the School.”

Kelly lived with a host family and, attended classes where faculty taught course content in Spanish. On the weekends, Kelly and the other volunteers in the ProPeru program assisted with community projects in impoverished outlying villages. Projects included reforestation, installing clean burning stoves, and health campaigns initiatives that included assisting with diagnostic tests, participating in women’s health assessment, and participating with the distributing of medical supplies. Kelly was able to visit other parts of the country: Machu Picchu, Lake Titicaca, and the Amazon rainforest. Drs. Norwood, Keatley, and Secrest presented papers at the 10th World Congress of the International Orem Society during the summer of 2008, held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
