MSN Course Descriptions
- Master of Science in Nursing Program Core Courses
- The Core Courses of the Master of Science in Nursing degree reflect the critical elements identified in the AACN's Essentials of Master's Education for Advanced Practice. This core content provides the foundation of all graduate nursing education. A total of 13-16 semester hours are required in the Core Curriculum component of the program of study.
- Nursing 500 Conceptual and Theoretical Foundations of Nursing (3 semester hours)
- This course explores the role of the advanced practice nurse within the framework of nursing science. It focuses on selected theoretical and conceptual nursing frameworks, which provide a foundation for advanced nursing practice.
- Nursing 501 Nursing Research Methods with Statistical Applications (4 semester hours)
- This course examines research in nursing. Research methods and statistical applications are explored utilizing nursing theory as a basis of research and practice.
- Nursing 512 Health Policy, Finance, & Economics (3 semester hours)
- This course examines health care policy, economics, and finance in health care systems including a focus on the advanced practice nursing role.
- Nursing 516 Diversity and Ethical Issues in Advanced Practice (3 semester hours)
- This course provides a basis for decisions regarding ethical issues in health care as they affect the person, communities, society and the health care profession as well as explore the wide diversity of cultural influences on behavior including ethnic, racial, gender and age differences.
- Nursing 599 Master's Thesis (5 semester hours)
- The conduction and completion of a scientific research study culminating in a formal paper and oral defense. The research-oriented scholarly paper will reflect the student's development of innovative nursing interventions or the synthesis or comprehensive analysis of nursing theory. This course is designed to enable students to study selected topics in the advanced practice nursing role that poses opportunities and challenges to practice critical thinking.
- Course Descriptions for Nurse Anesthesia Concentration
- The nurse anesthesia concentration includes core courses in nursing, support courses in the sciences, and specialty courses in nurse anesthesia. Students in this concentration will take a total of 49-52 semester hours. This includes the MSN Core Courses which comprise 13-16 semester hours. All students within the Anesthesia Concentration will take these courses.
- Nursing 504 Advanced Pathophysiology (3 semester hours)
- This course is an analysis of complex interrelationships and interdependence of organ systems in health and disease. Selected content relating to pulmonary, cardiovascular, renal, gastrointestinal, neurological, immunologic, and endocrine systems is included.
- Nursing 542 Advanced Physiology with Anatomy for Nurse Anesthesia I (3 semester hours)
- This course presents an in-depth, presentation of those aspects of selected anatomy and physiology which are relevant to the anesthetic management of clients. Students gain a knowledge base for use in analyzing, evaluating and utilizing principles of anatomy and physiology in anesthesia care.
- Nursing 543 Advanced Physiology with Anatomy for Nurse Anesthesia II (3 semester hours)
- This course continues from Nursing 542 to provide an in-depth, presentation of additional aspects of anatomy and physiology which are relevant to the anesthetic management of clients. Students continue to gain a knowledge base for use in analyzing, evaluating and utilizing principles of anatomy and physiology in anesthesia care.
- Nursing 544 Integrated Sciences for Nurse Anesthesia (3 semester hours)
- This course is an in-depth, concise and current presentation of those aspects of science and technology, which are applicable to human physiology and the equipment/environment directly associated with anesthesia patient care. Students gain a knowledge base for use in analyzing and evaluating the principles of physical science in anesthesia care.
- Nursing 545 Principles of Nurse Anesthesia Practice-Basic (3 semester hours)
- This course is designed to introduce theoretical concepts basic to safe anesthesia care. Cognitive, affective, and psychomotor skills for the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative anesthesia periods are emphasized. It is taken concurrently with Nursing 547r.
- Nursing 546 Principles of Advanced Nurse Anesthesia Practice-I (2 semester hours)
- This course examines selected disease processes and surgical complications of the anesthesia client. Selected surgical specialty areas and their implications for anesthesia care are presented. It is taken concurrently with Nursing 547r.
- Nursing 547r Nurse Anesthesia Practicum (Variable 1 - 8 hours* Schedule for N547r)
- This course provides clinical application of knowledge and skills necessary for safe administration of anesthesia. Students assume increasing responsibility for the independent delivery of anesthesia care as they progress.
- Nursing 548 Principles of Advanced Nurse Anesthesia Practice-II (2 semester hours)
- This course is a continuation of Nursing 546 with additional disease processes and potential and surgical complications of the anesthesia client. Different surgical specialty areas with their implications for anesthesia care are explored. It is taken concurrently with Nursing 547r.
- Nursing 580 Pharmacology for Advanced Practice (3 semester hours)
- This course presents pharmacotherapeutics essential for advanced nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on the most frequently prescribed medications in primary care and the special considerations for pediatric and geriatric clients
- Nursing 581 Advanced Pharmacology for Nurse Anesthesia (3 semester hours)
- This course provides the student with an in-depth, presentation of those aspects of pharmacology which are relevant to the safe administration of anesthesia.
- Nursing 583 Advanced Health Assessment (2 semester hours)
- This course presents advanced health assessment of clients of all ages, including formulation of a clinical diagnosis based upon the health assessment findings.
- Nursing 584 Advanced Health Assessment Lab (1 semester hour)
- This course provides students with an opportunity to apply of advanced health assessment techniques to clients of all ages.
- Course Descriptions for Family Nurse Practitioner Concentration
- Students in this concentration will take a total of 50-53 semester hours. This includes the MSN Core Courses which comprise 15-18 semester hours. An intensive clinical practicum (a total of 630 clock hours) parallels the didactic courses thus providing ongoing opportunity for application of theory to clinical practice. With a specialization in family Nurse Practitioner, you will be eligible to take the family nurse practitioner national certification exam offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association.
- Nursing 583 Advanced Health Assessment (2 semester hours)
- This course covers advanced health assessment of clients of all ages, including formulation of a clinical diagnosis based upon the health assessment findings.
- Nursing 584 Advanced Health Assessment Practicum (1 semester hour)
- This course emphasizes application of advanced health assessment techniques of clients of all ages, including formulation of a clinical diagnosis based upon the health assessment findings.
- Nursing 504 Advanced Pathophysiology (3 semester hours)
- This course provides analysis of complex interrelationships and interdependence of pathophysiological concepts that serve as a primary component of the foundation for clinical assessment, decision making , and management for advanced nursing practice.
- Nursing 580 Advanced Pharmacology (3 semester hours)
- This course evaluates the essential pharmacotherapeutics for advanced nursing practice. Emphasis is placed on commonly prescribed medications for clients of all ages.
- Nursing 551 Health Promotion and Illness Prevention in Primary Care (3 semester hours)
- This course emphasizes the theoretical foundations in health promotion, illness prevention and maintenance of function across the health-illness continuum with clients: the individual, family, and community.
- Nursing 552 Primary Care of Children (3 semester hours)
- This course evaluates the theoretical concepts in health promotion and illness prevention in children including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common acute and chronic health problems.
- Nursing 553 Primary Care of Children Practicum (2 semester hours)
- This practicum promotes application of theoretical concepts and skills in health promotion and illness prevention in children including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common acute and chronic health problems.
- Nursing 554 Primary Care of Adults (3 semester hours)
- This course analyzes theoretical concepts in health promotion and illness prevention in adults including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common and acute health problems.
- Nursing 555 Primary Care of Adult Practicum (2 semester hours)
- This practicum stresses application of theoretical concepts and skills in health promotion and illness prevention in adults including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common acute and chronic health problems.
- Nursing 556 Primary Care of Women (3 semester hours)
- This course discusses the theoretical concepts in health promotion and illness prevention in women including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common and acute health problems.
- Nursing 557 Primary Care of Women Practicum (2 semester hours)
- This practicum stresses the application of theoretical concepts and skills in health promotion and illness prevention in women including the diagnosis and therapeutic management of common and acute health problems.
- Nursing 559 Family Nurse Practitioner Practicum (8 semester hours)
- This practicum stresses application of advanced knowledge and skills through nursing practice as a Family Nurse Practitioner student.
