Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Post Master Doctor of Nursing Practice offers opportunities for the advanced practice nurse already in a direct practice role as well as those already in an indirect practice role.  The Post Baccalaureate also offers tracts for the baccalaureate-prepared nurse looking for a career in either a direct practice role or an indirect practice role.

Direct Practice Role

The direct practice role encompasses advanced practice nurses in direct patient care such as family nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and/or clinical nurse specialists.  The Post Masters DNP allows those already practicing in these roles with current licensure and certification through the appropriate organizations to complete the program with a translational project focusing in direct patient care.  The student will be expected to complete clinical experience hours in addition to hours earned during his/her master's level study to reach 1,000 hours mandated for the DNP.

The Post Baccalaureate DNP allows nurses with a BSN to complete their doctoral degree in a direct practice role.  Students interested in this role must complete core DNP coursework as well as specialty coursework and requirements.  Students must complete 1,000 mandated hours of clinical experience in the direct practice setting.  After completion of degree requirements, students must pass certification examination and apply for licensure with the appropriate organization.

Indirect Practice Role

The indirect practice role defines advanced practice nurses who are not in direct patient care settings such as nursing administration. Those practicing in this level with a MSN are able to complete the Post Master DNP with current certification through the appropriate organization.  The translational project for those in the indirect role will relate to the student's area of expertise in the indirect role.  The student entering in this role will be expected to complete the DNP with 1,000 hours of mandated clinical experience.

Nurses with a BSN interested in completing their doctoral degree in an indirect practice role are eligible for the Post Baccalaureate DNP.  Students must complete core DNP coursework as well as specialty coursework and requirements.  Students must complete the 1,000 mandated hours of clinical experience in the indirect practice setting.  After completion of degree requirements, students are eligible to complete certification examination in the specialty area they have completed degree requirements in.
