James Stroud, D.M.A.
James Stroud joined the UTC faculty in 1976 as professor of cello, chamber music, conducting, and music history. At the same time, he joined the Chattanooga Symphony as principal cellist and assistant conductor. Shortly thereafter (in 1978), he became Director of the University’s orchestral programs. In 1984, Dr. Stroud resigned from the Chattanooga Symphony and his conducting duties at UTC in order to concentrate on his becoming coordinator of graduate studies in music and program director of master’s degree programs in performance.
Dr. Stroud has served at the Iowa State University as professor of cello, chamber music, and music history. He was also their director of orchestras and is a founding member of the Amati Trio, the resident performing faculty chamber ensemble there. At the University of Colorado, he served as professor of cello, chamber music, and music history, as well conductor of the University Summer Symphony. He was a founding member of the University of Colorado (later Pablo Casals) Trio and music director of the Boulder Philharmonic. At Southern Illinois University in Carbondale he was professor of cello, chamber music, music history, and conducting. He was also their director of orchestras and a member of the Illinois Quartet.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Stroud has maintained a very active performing schedule as principal cellist of a number of American symphony orchestras, along with being a frequent soloist. These include the Chattanooga Symphony, the Tucson Symphony, the Knox-Galesburg Symphony, and the Denver Businessmen’s (Antonia Brico) Symphony. He has also appeared frequently as a recitalist and in chamber music performances throughout the United States and in the Orient.
In 2001, Dr. Stroud retired from full-time faculty service at UTC and serves at present as adjunct professor of music (cello) at both UTC and Southern Adventist University. He also serves as instructor of cello and double bass at the Cadek Conservatory of Music, a post he has held since 1976.
