Dr. Hobbs

Julie Hobbs is Lecturer of flute and music theory, and she also conducts the flute ensemble and teaches Woodwind Methods.  Prior to arriving at UTC she lived in Chicago, where she taught at Northwestern University as a lecturer and was an instructor at the National High School Music Institute.  In addition, she served on the faculties of the Merit School of Music and the Music Arts School and has lectured at the Chicago Cultural Center and Oakton Community College.

She holds a doctorate of music degree from Northwestern University as well as degrees from Baylor University and the University of Iowa.  Her primary teachers have included Walfrid Kujala, Helen Ann Shanley, and Betty Mather.  Her dissertation on George Crumb’s use of program has made her one of the country’s leading experts on the music of Crumb.

Active as a performer, she is co-principal flute of the Skokie Valley Symphony Orchestra and serves as the program annotator and pre-concert lecturer.  She has also performed with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra, Evanston Symphony, Illinois Philharmonic, the Des Moines Metro Opera, and the Waco Symphony.  Dr. Hobbs is also very active as a chamber musician.  She is founder and director of Chicago Musicale (a not-for-profit ensemble specializing in historically-themed lecture-recitals) and performs regularly with the new music ensemble dal niente.  In 2005, her chamber trio Tresillo, formed with Nikolasa Tejero and Karina Kontorovitch, embarked on a commission and recording project to expand the repertoire for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano, with several performances scheduled for the upcoming year.
