About the Opera Theater

The UTC Opera Theater provides study of and practical experience in preparation and performance of operas and opera scenes with attention to requirements of various style periods and emphasis of development and dramatic skills and stagecraft techniques. Participation in opera theater counts as a major ensemble for music majors and as an elective for non majors. An audition is a prerequisite for enrollment.

The opera theater prepares two productions each year, one per semester, which may consist of scenes from multiple operas, sets of arias and ensembles, multiple one-act operas, or full-length masterworks. Recent productions have included Mozart: Marriage of Figaro in 2007, Jonathan Bailey Holland's Naomi in the Living Room and the zarzuela La Verbena de la Paloma in fall 2008, and Johann Strauss' Die Fledermaus in Spring 2009.

There are performance grant scholarships available for incoming and transfer students who have an interest in opera.
