Chamber Singers

The UTC Chamber Singers is a small chorus of mixed voices that performs a wide variety of music. Membership is open to all UTC students through audition. Previous concerts have included formal chamber music, major works with orchestra including Chichester Psalms by Leonard Bernstein, "Lux Aeterna" by Morton Lauridsen and most recently Beethoven's Ninth Symphony with the Chattanooga Symphony Orchestra. They also perform folk songs, spirituals, contemporary music and vocal jazz. They have premiered "For the Beauty of the Earth" by Texas composer Harry Bulow, the Requiem Brevis by Boston composer Jonathan Bailey Holland, and "A Christmas Hymn" and an extended version of " To us is Given" by internationally known composer and jazz musician Dave Brubeck. They are recently completed work on the first volume of a two CD set of the choral works of Roland M. Carter in collaboration with the composer.

The Chamber Singers are the main touring choir in the Music Department at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Tours alternate from statewide to regional to international. They recently returned from a concert tour of Austria where they performed a joint concert with the chorus from the University of Vienna in the historic Karlskirche followed by concerts in the abbey at Melk and both the Cathedral and the University Church in Saltsburg. They were also the featured college chorus at the 2005 Tennessee Music Educators Association Convention in Nashville, TN.

The exact number of the membership shifts from year to year depending on the requirements of the literature selected for that year. Rehearsals take place four days per week: Monday and Wednesday from 12:00 until 12:50 and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10:50 until 12:05. They are directed by UTC Director of Choral Activities, Dr. J. Kevin Ford. Students wishing to audition for Chamber Singers (MUS 022-001 for undergraduates and MUS 500-022 for graduate students) perform a short (five minute) audition in which they sing My Country tis of Thee, their range is checked and they sing short ear training and sight singing examples. The auditions take place on the first day of the academic year usually with call-backs on the second day of the semester and at the end of the fall term for the rare occasion when there is an opening mid-year.
