Steve Ray is an Assistant Professor of Theatre and Speech at UTC where he directs and designs. He teaches theatre history, scenic design and playwriting. Steve earned his MFA in Theatre Directing from the University of Alabama. He has worked professionally as an actor, director and designer for companies such as the Oklahoma Shakespearean Festival, the Birmingham Children’s Theatre, Birmingham Festival Theatre, Poor Yorrick Productions and UA Opera. His favorite acting roles include Andrew Undershaft in Major Barbara, Alceste in The Misanthrope, Frank Butler in Annie Get Your Gun, Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors and William Shakespeare in the Off Broadway production of Dammit, Shakespeare! Catching Heaven’s Horse, a play Steve co-wrote with Nikki Hevesey, was produced in Los Angeles and was endorsed by evangelist Billy Graham. Locally, Steve has worked as a director, designer or actor with Destiny Theatre Company, Chattanooga State Repertory Theatre, and Ripple Theatre as well as serving on the board of Theatre for the New South.
Before coming to UTC, Steve taught at the University of Alabama, Birmingham Southern College, Shelton State Community College and Southern Union State Community College. He also served for six years as National Drama Director for Wycliffe Bible Translators Australia.
