Mr. Ulen

Ronald Ulen has recently returned to the United States to take on his new responsibilities as Director of Opera and Professor of Voice at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

After studies in Business Administration and Finance he turned his attention to music, earning his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Minnesota State University Mankato followed by Masters Degrees from Florida State University, in Vocal Performance and Opera Production / Management. Further studies led him to Vienna, Austria and the Metropolitan Opera in New York.

After touring with the National Opera Company and singing with various opera companies in the United States, he made his European debut at the renowned Opera House in Zurich, Switzerland. This led to a stay in Europe which lasted 18 years until August of 2006, when Mr. Ulen returned to the world of academics and full-time teaching.

An active and versatile performer who feels equally at home on the opera, concert, or recital stage, Mr. Ulen has performed over 85 roles in nearly 2000 performances. His career has taken him to opera stages and concert halls around the world including those of Vienna, Rome, London, Düsseldorf, Hamburg, New York, Munich, Tokyo, Paris, and Berlin.

In addition to his duties at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, Mr. Ulen still maintains an active performing and master class schedule including performances this past summer (2008) in England, Germany, and Italy, with invitations to return in 2009. Upcoming U.S. performances include the Beethoven Ninth Symphony and Turandot with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera.

Despite his busy schedule, Mr. Ulen has always found time for teaching and nurturing promising young singers and colleagues, and his current and former students are represented on the rosters of numerous European opera houses.
