Dr. Shurtz joined the university as Director of Cadek Conservatory of Music in 2002. Along with his duties as Director of Cadek Conservatory he is a Music Deparatment adjunct instructor in Music 111 Introduction to Music; Music 251 Applied Organ; Music 315 and 316 Undergraduate Music History and Music 411 Graduate Music History. He is an accomplished piano technician and before coming to Chattanooga he tuned and repaired pianos in the College of Music at the University of Colorado and was Assistant Carilloneur at Brigham Young University. In Chattanooga he continues his work as an independent piano and organ tuner. He is a member of the Chattanooga Bach Chorale, Chattanooga Music Society, Susquehanna Chorale, President of Susquehanna Chorale, Allied Arts Advisory Board for Pennsylvania, Advisory Board of the Whitaker Center for Science and Performing Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, National Guild of the Community Schools of the Arts, American Musicological Society, College Music Society and Pi Kappa Lambda Musical Honor Society.
