Dr. Dean
Robert Dean received his Ph.D. in Music Education from the Florida State University in 2000. He was a student of Cliff Madsen and André Thomas. He has since taught choral music education and directed choirs at Radford University, Marshall University and, currently, at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. Dean has conducted choral groups at every age level, including church and community choirs. His high school choirs consistently received Superior ratings and won several “Best in Class” awards.
As an accomplished trombonist, he has also played in orchestras and bands, both in Europe and in the United States. He was a trombone student of Denis Wick of the London Symphony Orchestra and William F. Cramer at Florida State University. He studied conducting with Donald Neuen, Joseph Flummerfelt and Rodney Eichenberger. He was also assistant conductor and principal trombonist of the Oak Ridge Symphony Orchestra. A native of Chattanooga, he played under Jewell S. Tilson at Chattanooga High School. It was Tilson’s musicianship and teaching that inspired Dean to pursue music as a career.
Dr. Dean was honored to be nominated for the Julius Herford Award in 2000 for his dissertation on the original, touring Robert Shaw Chorale. The work is to be published in January, 2009, the 10th anniversary of Mr. Shaw’s death.
Dr. Dean is active in Music Educator’s National Conference and American Choral Director’s Association. He maintains a busy schedule of guest conducting, teaching, and coaching student teachers. He is also an adjudicator for Fiesta Val and Virginia Music Educators Association. Dean’s hobbies include travel, reading, chess, and golf.
