2009 Fall Trumpet Ensemble

The UTC Trumpet Ensemble and UTC Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble will present a joint concert on Friday, November 13 at 7:30 P.M. in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall (corner of Palmetto and Vine). This is a free concert featuring lots of exciting new music by both ensembles.

The Trumpet Ensemble will be premiering three compositions, all of which are composed by members of our UTC family. These works were composed specifically for the UTC Trumpet Ensemble. Alexander Cooze is the composer of "Individuality" and is a communications major at UTC. His minor is music composition, and "Individuality" is his first work ever to be performed. Alexander studies with Dr. Jonathan B. McNair, the composer of "Trilogy". Dr. McNair is currently a U.C. Foundation Associate Professor of Music at UTC, where he serves as Coordinator of Music Theory and also teaches composition. The slow movement of "Trilogy" was inspired by Donald Erb, Dr. McNair’s former composition professor, and a trumpet player who passed away in the summer of 2008. "Möbius", Op. 17, the final piece to be performed by the Trumpet Ensemble, was written by Dr. Kenyon Wilson. Dr. Wilson is the Professor of Low Brass at UTC. He is the director of the Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble (also featured in this concert), and he also teaches music theory. Math enthusiasts will love to hear how his musical möbius compares to an actual one. Moreover, Dr. Wilson even embedded the last name of the Trumpet Ensemble director (Schafer) into the piece.

2009 Tuba Euphonium Ensemble

The Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble will also feature new music and music by Chattanooga musicians. The opening piece, Ralph Vaughan Williams’ "Flourish", is arranged by David Butler, director of bands at the Chattanooga School of Arts and Sciences. Robert Starer’s "Lyric Music" is arranged by Dr. William Lee, founder and first director of the UTC Tuba/Euphonium Ensemble. Original works on the program include two pieces by the current director, Dr. Kenyon Wilson. The newest work, "Dance No. 2", Op. 18—composed a mere seventeen years after "Dance No. 1", Op. 2—debuted in October. This performance marks its Chattanooga premiere.
