Cadek Community Orchestra

On Sunday, April 26, 2009 the UTC Cadek Community Orchestra will present its Spring Concert in the Roland Hayes Concert Hall, UTC Fine Arts Center (at the corner of Vine and Palmetto Streets) at 3:00 PM. The concert will be conducted by graduate students David Long and Roy Denton. The concert is free and open to the general public.

The program will open with Mozart’s Overture to The Abduction from the Seraglio. The Abduction from the Seraglio was Mozart’s first commissioned opera in the Viennese court of Austrian Emporer Joseph II. Mozart gave free rein to a contemporary interest in Turkey and composed the piece in a style reminicsent of a Turkish Janissary (Military) band. Following the Mozart will be two movements from Haydn’s beloved Symphony #94 in G Major, better known as the “Surprise” symphony from the big outburst with kettledrum in the otherwise mostly quiet and calm 2nd movement. Additionally the orchestra will perform Copland’s An Outdoor Overture, a piece originally composed by Copland for a New York high school. To close the concert will be the first movement of Schubert’s “Unfinished Symphony”. An interesting note is that Schubert’s symphonies have recently been renumbered, moving the “Unfinished” from number eight to number seven.

The Cadek Community Orchestra exists for musicians from on and off campus who love and appreciate symphonic music. They meet every Tuesday evening from 7:30-9:00pm and perform once a semester. The group often serves as a training ground for graduate conducting students allowing them to hone their skills in front of an ensemble. Membership in the group is available by audition with Maestro Jooyong Ahn, who may be contacted at 423-425-4614 or by email at jooyong-ahn@utc.edu.
