Baritone Ronald Ulen has recently returned to the United States to take on his new responsibilities as Director of Opera and Professor of Voice at The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He received his Bachelors Degree in Music Education from Minnesota State University Mankato, and two Masters Degrees from Florida Sate University, in Voice and Opera Production/Directing.

Mr. Ulen began his operatic career with The National Opera Company and with regional American opera companies, appearing in 37 of the United States. After further studies in New York and Vienna, a successful European debut in "Il Trovatore" in Zurich, Switzerland led to a 20 year affiliation with various opera houses in Europe. His extensive repertoire includes the title roles in Verdi's Falstaff, Nabucco, Rigoletto, and Simon Boccanegra as well as Tschaikovsky's Eugene Onegin, Bartok's Bluebeard's Castle and Wagner's Der Fliegende Holländer (Flying Dutchman).

Guest appearances in opera und concert have taken Ronald Ulen to the stages and concert halls of New York, Vienna, Bamberg, Düsseldorf, Rome, Miami, Washington, D.C., Hamburg, Chicago, Munich, Tokyo, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, among others. He has been seen and heard on American PBS, German National Radio, and Italian RAI.

Additional roles include Germont in Verdi's La Traviata, Belcore in L'Elisir d'Amore, Conte Almaviva in Le Nozze di Figaro, und Conte di Luna in Il Trovatore" as well as soloist in Brahms Requiem, Orff's Carmina Burana, Händels Messiah, Mendelssohns Elijah and Beethovens 9th Symphony. Further, he has sung the four villains in The Tales of Hoffmann as well as Miller in Luisa Miller, Amonasro in Aida, Don Carlo in La Forza del Destino and Renato in Un Ballo in Maschera.

A versatile performer who feels equally at home on the opera, concert, or recital stage, Mr. Ulen has sung over 85 roles in more than 2000 performances. Despite his busy performing schedule, he has always tried to find time for teaching, and his current and former students have been winners of prestigious competitions, as well as being represented on the rosters of numerous European opera houses. Mr. Ulen is a much sought after adjudicator of vocal competitions and as a clinician he has presented masterclasses in Germany, Italy, Switzerland and the United States.
