Dr. Shurtz joined the university as Director of Cadek Conservatory of Music in 2002. Along with his duties as Director of Cadek Conservatory, he is a Music Department Lecturer in undergraduate and graduate music history. He is a independent piano and organ tuner. He is currently a member of the Chattanooga Music Society and services as committee chairperson for the renovation of the Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Auditorium Organ. In Pennsylvania he was the President of Susquehanna Chorale Board of Directors, Allied Arts Advisory Board for Pennsylvania, Advisory Board of the Whitaker Center for Science and Performing Arts in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, He is also a member of the American Musicological Society, College Music Society and Pi Kappa Lambda Musical Honor Society. He has sung with the Susquehanna Chorale for ten years and the Chattanooga Bach Choir for four years.
