Professor Lee has taught brass lessons, Secondary Music Education, Tests and Measurements, Research Methods, History and Philosophy of Music Education, the Psychology of Music, and directed student teaching and graduate theses in the Department. Prior to joining the music faculty, he was a successful high school and middle school band director and has conducted community orchestras and choirs in Chattanooga. He is Research Chair of the Tennessee Music Education Association.
Dr. Lee is deeply interested in research in music education. He has served as Chair of the History Special Research Interest Group of the MENC and received the HSRIG national special service award in 2004. His service has included membership on the boards of the Journal of Research in Music Education and the Journal of Historical Research in Music Education. He has reviewed historical work for the Quarterly Journal of the History of Education and Oxford University Press and has published in the Dictionary of the History of Education. Further, he has published in such diverse journal and magazines as The Music Educators Journal, The Journal of Band Research, The Tennessee Musician, The Journal of Church Music, The Journal of Research in Music Education, and many others.
In addition to many articles and book chapters, Dr. Lee has published compositions for brass and woodwinds. He has lectured overseas twice and has toured with his university brass group in France and Germany. Professor Lee is the recipient of several grants, honors, and awards. He is a University Research Fellow, was selected as a participant in the Northwestern University Leadership Seminar in 2004, and was a recipient of German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) award for study in Germany in 2005. His scholarly specialties include the history of music education in both the early twentieth and in the early nineteenth centuries and the psychology of music. Among his published work are articles on Lowell Mason, on Sousa, and on the American rural reform movement in music in the twentieth century.
He studied low brass, harmony, and counterpoint with David L. Walters of Jacksonville State University, composition with John Corina of the University of Georgia, and research with Gordon P. Henderson, Rey Longyear, and Bernard Fitzgerald at the University of Kentucky. He did post-doctoral work with Allen P. Britton at the University of Michigan. Professor Lee is a frequent presenter and speaker at music education conferences and is a member of several musical and scholarly societies.
Teaching Philosophy
In my teaching and mentoring activities, I encourage undergraduate and graduate students to become as informed about as many aspects of music as possible, so they can be thoughtful and current in their preparation, planning, teaching, performance, composition and advocacy. My ultimate objective is to help nurture well-educated and exceptional leaders in the field of music and music education, whatever their specialties.
