How to Enroll in the Music Department
So, you have decided you want to come to UTC and major in music? We are thrilled that you have decided to join us. However, before you can be a music major, there are a few steps you have to take whether you are enrolling as a Freshman, a transfer student, or a UTC student who is changing his major. Use this checklist to make sure you cover all your bases.
-
Enroll in UTC
We have a whole department that deals with enrolling in UTC: the ADMISSIONS DEPARTMENT. They have a great website and several people on staff who can answer any question you might have about enrolling. -
Declare your major
Every student who enrolls in the Music Department, whether they are a freshman, a transfer student, or a current student changing their major, will be enrolled as a "Pre-Music" Major. Yes, we know that the UTC Application does not list "Pre-Music" major in their list of majors. It's ok to put "Music" as your intended major on the application. A Pre-Music major is just someone who has not yet met all our requirements to be declared a music major. You'll be there soon enough! -
Prepare your audition
Every student who enrolls in the Music Department must perform a live audition in front of some of the music department faculty. You and your private teacher should take a look at our AUDITION REQUIREMENTS and select pieces for you to perform at your audition. Once you select these, practice them until they are as close to perfect as you can achieve. -
Schedule your audition
You must contact the Music Department office to schedule an audition. If you are wanting to audition for a performance grant, you may complete the online audition request form. Please see the Audition Requirements page for the audition dates. -
Pass a Music Theory Exam
All incoming freshmen and sophomore students must take the Music Theory Diagnostic Exam - a placement test indicating that you are ready for college-level music theory. Students transferring as juniors or above must take the Sophomore Theory Proficiency Examination. (Click link for more information about this test.) These tests will be given on the Spring audition dates, at summer Orientation, and on the Friday before fall classes begin.
NOTE: Incoming juniors and seniors are expected to prepare for upper-division (3000 or 4000 level) auditions. These students should consult with a professor about additional audition requirements for upper level admission.
Now am I a Music Major?
Maybe. If you do not perform adequately on your audition, you may be assigned further study on your chosen instrument at the 100 or 200 level. If you fail to make the minimum score on the Theory Diagnostic Exam, you must complete a music fundamentals course with a grade of C or better. Until these deficiencies are corrected, you will remain a Pre-Music Major. Once you have successfully passed the audition and the Theory Diagnostic Exam, the Music Department will notify the Records office to classify you as a Music Major.
If you have questions about any step of this process, please contact the Music Department by phone at (423) 425-4601, by email at music@utc.edu or stop by the Fine Arts Center room 308 and request an appointment to discuss your questions.
