Phi Alpha Theta

Inductions to the Lambda-Pi Chapter of Phi Alpha Theta, the International History Honor Society, are held in the fall semester. Students who are interested in history and have a high grade point average are nominated by the department faculty for induction. At the initiation ceremony, new initiates are given a certificate of membership.

The faculty advisor for the UTC chapter of this organization is Professor Michelle White.

On February 15, 2007 our chapter hosted the Southeastern Tennessee Student History Conference.  Including UTC, four universities participated (Lee University, Southern Adventist University, Covenant College) and in total fifteen students took part.  From our chapter, the following students participated:

At the Tennessee Regional Phi Alpha Theta conference held at Tennessee State University in Nashville, on March 24, 2007 our representatives included:

Matthew Crigger, "Hank Greenberg:  The Six-Pointed Baseball Star"

Eric Fox, "Thomas Jefferson:  A Modern Republican in a Patrician Oligarchy"

This conference hosted fifty-four students (graduate and undergraduate) from Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, and Kentucky.  Of those, only seven were judged to be outstanding--according to criteria such as: originality, effective use of primary sources, familiarity with the secondary literature, clarity of writing style, and effectiveness of argument.  Eric Fox's paper was recognized as one of the best and, as such, he was awarded a book prize.
