Announcements:
This year has been one of transition for the department. the sad news is that Rusell Linnemann died last July. Russell came to UTC in 1970. His teaching specialty for the first two decades of his career at UTC was Subsaharan Africa. In later years, he turned to his lifelong musical love and taught a popular course on the History of the Blues. His publications included works on various topics in African history and the blues. He won an SGA outstanding teacher award in 1986.
The good news is that after an extensive process the department has succeeded in hiring two new tenure track faculty. Dr. Ralph Covino has been tapped to fill the line in ancient history. He earned his Ph.D from the University of St. Andrews: his dissertation was focused on Roman Magistrates in Sicily. In addition to sections of History 103, Dr. covino will teach courses on Roman history and speialized ancient history topics. Ms. Sara Jorgensen has agreed to answer our call for a specialist in African history. She is working on her Ph.D. at Princeton University. Her dissertation is focused on the activities of the American Zulu Mission in South Africa from 1835 to the end of WWI. She will begin her teaching career at UTC by teaching sections of History 105 and reviving Dr. Linnemann's 300 level course on Subsaharan Africa. We are delighted that both Dr. Covino and Ms. Jorgensen have agreed to join our department.
