Graduate Degrees in Health Sciences

The College of Graduate Health Sciences of the University of Tennessee, Memphis offers graduate instruction leading to the Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees. Combined D.D.S./Ph.D., M.D/Ph.D and Pharm.D./Ph.D. curricula in the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, and Pharmacy are available for exceptionally qualified students with Baccalaureate
degrees.

Physician Assistant

Physician assistants (PA's) are health professionals licensed to practice medicine with physician supervision. Physician assistants are qualified by graduation from an accredited physician assistant education program and certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA). They may obtain medical histories, perform complete physical examinations and minor surgical procedures, order and interpret routine diagnostic tests, develop diagnostic and management plans, provide treatment of persons with acute and chronic illness and respond appropriately to life threatening emergencies. In addition, they may provide patient education and facilitate patient referral
to community health and social service agencies.

Nursing

Nurses are concerned with the prevention of illness, the promotion of health, and the care of the sick.

Podiatric Medicine

Podiatric physicians diagnose, treat, and prevent diseases and disorders of the human foot and ankle. They receive the Doctor of Podiatric Medicine (D.P.M.) professional degree from a podiatric medical school. Admission requirements are similar to those for medical schools.

Physical Therapy

The professional physical therapist works to prevent and treat patients suffering from bodily injury and/or disease. The therapist works very closely with a variety of health professionals, including physicians and nurses. Physical therapists may find themselves working in a variety of areas such as research and administration.

Chiropractic Medicine

Chiropractic health practitioners use a natural health method that does not involve drugs or surgery. They provide non-invasive health care and are best known for relieving back and neck pain.

Medical Technology

A medical technologist is a skilled laboratory scientist who performs and evaluates laboratory procedures using sophisticated instruments. Areas of laboratory science involved include hematology, immunohematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, serology, immunology, urinalysis, mycology, and parasitology. Some medical technologists specialize in one area and others remain generalists.

Dental Hygiene

The dental hygienist carries out preventive oral health care. Maintaining optimal oral health, preventing oral diseases, and intervening with therapeutic services when deemed necessary by dentists are all roles of a dental hygienist. A bachelor of science degree in dental hygiene can be obtained after completion of two years of college work at UTC and a two year dental hygiene program.

Health Information Management

Health Information Management is an excellent career for business majors and for those biology majors who enjoy working with computers, yet desire a career that uses their science background and interest in dealing with people. Health Information Management graduates work in hospitals, law offices or as consultants.

Cytotechnology

A cytotechnologist uses a microscope to examine cells that have been shed, scraped or aspirated from body tissues . The technologist prepares samples by using staining techniques appropriate for the cells to be studied. Skilled cytotechnologists are able to recognize abnormalities in color, size and shape. Examination results aid physicians in making diagnoses. There is considerable demand for graduates in private laboratories and hospitals.

Medical Illustration

Medical Illustrators are specially trained artists who communicate medical and scientific ideas. It is a profession that requires training and skill in both art and science. Examples of roles Medical Illustrators fill:
-documentation of medical and scientific procedures for journals and books
-design of multimedia materials for presentations and web pages
-employment by medical schools and medical centers
-employment by advertising agencies and publishers
-employment by pharmaceutical and medical product companies
-production of demonstrative evidence for legal cases.
