Movement Science (Pre-Athletic Training) Concentration

UTC has one of the few Accredited Masters Degree Entry Level Athletic Training programs in the country. If you are an undergraduate student who has a desire to be an athletic trainer, this is the concentration to select. The Movement Science Concentration will prepare you for admission into the Masters Degree Entry Level Athletic Training program. There are undergraduate athletic training programs at other schools. However, seventy percent of all athletic trainers have a Masters Degree. Therefore, it is best to pursue a Masters Degree in Athletic Training. In the job market, someone with a Masters Degree in Athletic Training will almost always be hired before someone with an Undergraduate Athletic Training Degree.

If you would like more information on what an Athletic Trainer might do and career possiblilies, visit the website for the National Athletic Trainer's Association, www.nata.org.

If you already know you want to be an Athletic Trainer, program specifics are listed below.

Program Admittance and Evaluation Point:

Students will first declare a Pre-Athletic Training (Pre-AT) major code. Students must meet the same admission requirements as all other applicants to the University. Academic advising for all students under the pre major code of Pre-AT will be done by the Director of Clinical Education for the Graduate Athletic Training Program. Following the spring semester of the sophomore year, the Director of Clinical Education for the Graduate Athletic Training Program will select and notify the students that have been approved for admission into the Movement Science concentration based upon the criteria outlined below. Students not selected for admission will also be advised and told to select a new major. The Registrar will be advised in writing by the Health & Human Performance Department of the students approved for admission into the Health & Human Performance Movement Science program and will facilitate the change in major code for the approved students. If the student does not meet the criteria for admittance into the Movement Science program, they may opt to declare HHP-Exercise Science Concentration.

As stated previously, the determination of admittance into the Movement Science major will be at the end of the Sophomore year. This cut-off point occurs early enough to allow students to transition into HHP-Exercise Science Concentration. Students will not be required to complete courses that can not be transferred into the HHP-Fitness Wellness degree.

Selection into the Movement Science Major is based upon an evaluation of the following factors:

  • A cumulative grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 point scale at UTC.
  • Completion of the Movement Science Application Form by the first Monday in April of their sophomore year
  • Completion of credit hours required for junior classification including the following courses with no grade lower than a C:
    • BIOL 1210
    • BIOL 1910
    • BIOL 2080
    • CHEM 1210/1230
    • CHEM 1220/1240

After you have met the requirements, please download the Movement Science Concentration Admission Form and submit it to Dr. Burch Oglesby, Maclellan Gym Room 209.
