Mission Statement

EHLS is a department within the College of Education & Applied Professional Studies. The EHLS Department is committed to the development and maintenance of active, creative health-promoting life-styles and enhancement of skilled and aesthetic performance for both professional and consumer.

Our mission is to remain central to the purpose of the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga through a commitment to cultural diversity and the full development of human potential. Specifically the EHLS department encompasses three disciplines pertaining to the enhancement of the "Quality of Life": exercise science, health promotion, and leisure studies. As consumers knowledges, aesthetic appreciations, socialization skills are enhanced through the various disciplines, a broad based liberal education is best served.

This is accomplished through:

a faculty advocating strong and diverse programs of study in exercise science, health promotion and leisure studies

conducting and coordinating professional conferences, workshops, seminars

offering, developing and delivering programs of study in exercise science, health promotion and leisure studies

marketing professionals, programs and personnel in the fields of study

conducting and disseminating research and scholarly writing

providing consultative services

supporting and promoting leadership within the profession

preserving our professional heritage

promoting professional development, faculty development and evaluation

promoting legislative advocacy

providing services to consumers in fitness, health promotion and leisure studies

EHLS is committed to fulfilling this mission through fostering a climate of mutual respect and cooperation among professionals and consumers. Our commitment also includes developing competent consumers/professionals who have mastered the knowledge and skills required to perform such specialized roles as teachers, consultants, directors and managers in a variety of public and private fields in addition to appreciating fitness and its relationship to "Quality of Life."
