B.S. in Health and Human Performance with a concentration in Exercise Science: Applied
This concentration becomes active in the Fall of 2009. It is replacing the current Exerise Science Concentration.
This concentration is designed for anyone interested in professional preparation in exercise and wellness programming for community, corporate, and/or private fitness/wellness programs. The program of study is structured to serve as preparation for the American College of Sports Medicine's Health Fitness Instructor Certification Examination. Here is a list of some of our graduates who have gotten their ACSM Health/Fitness Certification. Many students ask what is the difference between this concentration and the pre-professional concentration. The applied concentration has more practical classes to prepare you to work in the field. The pre-professional concentration includes more basic science classes to better prepare you for graduate school. It is possible to use this major to meet all the pre-requesites for the Physical Therapy or Athletic Training Graduate School Programs. All of your electives plus one hour would be comprised of science classes.
If you are wondering what type of careers a degree in Fitness/Wellness might prepare you to do, the ACSM has a pamplet on careers in Sports Medicine and Exercise Science.
Some of the course that make this degree special are:
HHP 314 Interpretation of EKG I: An introduction to electrocardiography and the interpretation of normal and abnormal cardiac rhythms.
