The Clarence E. Harris Chair is held by Dr. Richard Becherer.
The Clarence E. Harris Chair of Excellence in Business Administration was established to give students and faculty the opportunity to study and work with an individual who is experienced in education and/or business. These individuals would also have the ability to organize and direct programs, workshops, and lecture series in business and entrepreneurship. This will bring to the Chattanooga community and the University community a better understanding of the role that entrepreneurship plays in the society and society plays in the economy and contemporary business.
Dr. Becherer has a rich background with both academic and entrepreneurship experience. As an entrepreneur, he started one of the first for-profit and publicly traded HMO's in the U.S. and was involved in a variety of other entrepreneurship businesses including marina management and real estate development. On the academic side, he has over eighteen years of experience as a faculty member at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan and at UTC. His area of specialty includes both entrepreneurship and marketing. Dr. Becherer has published research in many leading academic journals including the Journal of Entrepreneurship Theory and Practice, the Journal of Small Business Management, the Journal of Marketing, the Journal of Consumer Research, Decision Sciences, and the Journal of the Academy of Marketing Science. Currently he serves as a reviewer for academic journals and the conferences of several international entrepreneurship associations.
